What is so Special About the Canadian Rockies?

On this page, we describe what is so special about the Canadian Rockies by highlighting five things that are either unique or memorable about this region of western Canada.

MOUNTAIN SCENERY. The Canadian Rockies are part of the Rocky Mountain range which runs along the west side of North America (see Where are the Canadian Rockies?). The Canadian section of the range is dominated by snowcapped peaks, glaciers and ice fields, multi-hued lakes, rushing rivers, and alpine meadows, which combine to create one of the world’s most beautiful destinations.

FAMOUS PARKS. Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay, Waterton Lakes, Mount Assiniboine, and others. While Mother Nature dealt a winning hand to the Canadian Rockies, early governments had the foresight to protect most of the land in a string of contiguous parks that are now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

WILDLIFE. The Canadian Rockies are special for the variety of wildlife that makes its home in this wilderness. Not only is wildlife abundant, but it’s also accessible. You may see elk or deer within town boundaries, bighorn sheep walking down roadways, or bears feeding beside highways. See Canadian Rockies Wildlife Viewing.

HIKING. The Canadian Rockies are renowned as a hiking destination. Over 3,000 kilometres (1,860 miles) of hiking trails lace the region. They offer something for everyone, with paved trails leading around scenic lakes and steep climbs to high alpine passes. The parks have over 400 designated day trips, plus many longer options for those with the desire to head deep into the backcountry on an overnight trek. See Canadian Rockies Hiking.

ACCESSIBLE WILDERNESS. For many visitors, one of the most appealing features of the Canadian Rockies is that the region has something for everyone. Sure, you can hike and camp, but there are also bustling resort towns such as Banff, Jasper, and Canmore; day spas, golf courses, and helicopter rides; as well as world-class restaurants and luxury lodges for when your day of adventuring ends.
